Sleep deprivation has reached epidemic proportions in Ireland, as across much of the developed world. The drivers are multiple and interconnected: excessive screen time disrupting melatonin production, high levels of work-related stress, alcohol use (which impairs sleep quality despite seemingly aiding sleep onset), shift work, anxiety disorders (prevalent in Ireland), and the general acceleration of modern life.
The consequences of chronic poor sleep are profound and well-documented:
Yet many Irish people are reluctant to use prescription sleeping medications (benzodiazepines, Z-drugs) due to well-founded concerns about dependence, tolerance, and next-morning grogginess. Natural sleep support offers a genuine, non-addictive alternative for most people with mild-to-moderate sleep difficulties.
Before discussing supplements, it's worth emphasising that no supplement will fully compensate for poor sleep hygiene. The term "sleep hygiene" refers to the environmental and behavioural practices that support good sleep โ and getting these right creates the foundation everything else builds on.
We've covered magnesium in depth in our dedicated guide, but its role in sleep deserves special mention here. Magnesium is required for the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest" mode), for the regulation of melatonin production (via the pineal gland), and for GABA activity โ the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter that "quiets" the nervous system for sleep.
Magnesium glycinate, taken at 200โ400mg approximately 30โ60 minutes before bed, is one of the most consistently effective and well-tolerated sleep interventions available. Clinical trials in older adults (who are most often deficient and most often troubled by poor sleep) have shown significant improvements in sleep onset, sleep duration, and subjective sleep quality.
Pat Coffey's recommendation: "Magnesium glycinate before bed is often the first thing I suggest to customers who can't sleep. The improvement in sleep depth and quality is frequently remarkable โ and there's no grogginess the next morning."
Passionflower โ Passiflora incarnata โ is a North American climbing plant with a long history of traditional use as a calming and sleep-promoting herb in both Native American and European herbal medicine. It has been used in European herbal pharmacopoeia since the 18th century and is licensed as a Traditional Herbal Remedy in the EU for anxiety and sleep.
Passionflower contains multiple bioactive flavonoids โ most notably chrysin and apigenin โ that bind to GABA-A receptors in the brain (the same receptors targeted by benzodiazepine drugs, but with much milder, non-addictive action). It also contains harman alkaloids that have mild monoamine oxidase inhibitory (MAOI) activity, supporting serotonin levels. The combination of GABA-A modulation and serotonin support makes passionflower particularly effective for anxiety-driven insomnia โ the racing mind that prevents sleep onset.
A randomised controlled trial published in Phytotherapy Research found that passionflower tea significantly improved subjective sleep quality compared to placebo. A double-blind trial compared passionflower tincture to low-dose oxazepam (a benzodiazepine) for generalised anxiety disorder โ passionflower was non-inferior for anxiety reduction, with no impairment of job performance.
Pat Coffey at The Honey Pot specifically recommends A.Vogel Passiflora Calm (formerly Dormeasan where passionflower is combined with valerian). The A.Vogel range uses fresh herb extracts โ the plant is processed immediately after harvest, preserving the full spectrum of volatile compounds that drying and powdering can destroy. A.Vogel is a Swiss company founded by herbalist Alfred Vogel, with a strong commitment to quality that has made it the leading herbal brand in Irish and UK health stores for decades. Their passiflora tincture is one of the most sold sleep products at The Honey Pot.
"A.Vogel's Passiflora is my first recommendation for customers who lie awake with a busy, anxious mind. It's gentle enough for most people, including those who are sensitive to supplements, yet consistently effective for the anxious insomniac pattern." โ Pat Coffey
Valerian is perhaps the most extensively studied herbal sleep remedy. An ancient European plant used for anxiety and sleep disorders since at least Hippocrates' time, it was listed in pharmacopoeias across Europe throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It remains one of the top-selling herbal products in Ireland.
Valerian's mechanism is multi-factorial. It contains valerenic acid, which modulates GABA-A receptors (the same system as passionflower, but with different binding sites and different secondary chemistry). It also contains isovaleric acid, linarin, and hesperidin, all of which have sedative properties. The combination appears to have synergistic effects beyond any single compound.
A meta-analysis by Bent et al. in the American Journal of Medicine reviewed 16 clinical studies on valerian for sleep โ the majority found that valerian improved sleep quality without producing side effects. It particularly helps with sleep onset latency (time to fall asleep) and sleep quality ratings. Effects tend to build over 2โ4 weeks of regular use rather than acting immediately like a sedative drug.
Valerian is frequently combined with hops (Humulus lupulus) โ a traditional pairing with complementary mechanisms โ and with passionflower. The combination covers a broader range of sleep-disrupting mechanisms and typically outperforms either herb alone.
Bach Rescue Sleep is a specific formulation in the Bach Flower Remedy tradition โ originally developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s. It contains the five original Rescue Remedy flowers (Cherry Plum, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Rose, and Star of Bethlehem) plus White Chestnut โ the remedy Bach specifically associated with unwanted, repetitive thoughts that prevent sleep.
"Bach Rescue Sleep is one of the products I'm asked about most at The Honey Pot, and I'm comfortable recommending it โ particularly for people whose sleep problems come from an inability to 'switch off' mentally. White Chestnut addresses that mental chatter pattern specifically. The drops or the spray form are both popular โ many customers keep the spray on the bedside table."
Bach Rescue Sleep is available in liquid drops and a convenient spray format. It is alcohol-based (brandy is used as preservative in the original formulations, though alcohol-free versions using vegetable glycerine are now available), so those avoiding alcohol should request the alcohol-free version. It contains no pharmaceutical ingredients and is safe for all ages (the alcohol-free version for children).
While the mechanism of action of flower remedies is not explained by standard biochemistry, the evidence base from user experience across decades of practice is consistent โ and the products are non-toxic and non-habit-forming regardless of mechanism.
A European herb from the mint family with a long history of calming use. Lemon balm inhibits GABA transaminase (the enzyme that breaks down GABA) โ increasing GABA activity and producing anxiolytic and mild sedative effects. Frequently combined with valerian. A clinical trial in children and adults found lemon balm extract significantly reduced anxiety and sleep disorders. Its gentle, pleasant taste makes it particularly suitable for children's herbal preparations.
CBD (cannabidiol) oil has attracted enormous interest for sleep and anxiety. The legal position in Ireland:
Melatonin is not available as an over-the-counter supplement in Ireland โ it requires a prescription under Irish law, unlike in the US and many European countries where it's sold freely. It's primarily prescribed for jet lag and for older adults (where melatonin production declines). If you believe melatonin would help your sleep, discuss it with your GP.
