Healthy ageing has become one of the most exciting frontiers in both scientific research and natural health. The question has shifted from simply how long we live, to how well we live โ maintaining energy, cognitive sharpness, physical capability, and quality of life into our seventies, eighties, and beyond. In Ireland, average life expectancy has increased significantly in recent decades, but healthspan โ the number of years lived in good health โ hasn't always kept pace.
At The Honey Pot in Clonmel, naturopath Pat Coffey takes a pragmatic, evidence-informed view of healthy ageing: the most powerful longevity tools are lifestyle fundamentals, with targeted natural supplements playing a supporting role. This guide covers both the well-established and the emerging.
Before discussing any individual supplement, it's worth stating clearly: the most powerful evidence-based "anti-ageing" interventions are not in a bottle. They are:
Oxidative stress โ the accumulation of free radical damage in cells over time โ is one of the central mechanisms of biological ageing. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals, reducing the cumulative cellular damage that contributes to ageing and chronic disease.
Key antioxidants for healthy ageing:
Coenzyme Q10 is both a critical component of mitochondrial energy production and a powerful antioxidant. CoQ10 levels decline significantly with age โ and are further depleted by statin medications (cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by many older Irish adults). This double depletion โ from both ageing and medication โ makes CoQ10 supplementation particularly relevant for older adults, especially those on statins.
Ubiquinol (the reduced, active form of CoQ10) is more bioavailable than ubiquinone, particularly in older adults whose ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol decreases with age. A daily dose of 100โ300mg of ubiquinol is commonly recommended for healthy ageing support. Pat Coffey considers CoQ10/ubiquinol one of the most justified healthy ageing supplements for Irish adults over 50.
Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in grape skins, red wine, and berries. It captured enormous scientific and public interest following research showing it activates sirtuins โ proteins involved in cellular repair and longevity โ and mimics some effects of caloric restriction (which is the most consistently longevity-extending intervention in animal models).
The real-world picture is more nuanced: most resveratrol clinical trials in humans have found modest effects, partly because oral bioavailability of standard resveratrol supplements is poor (it is rapidly metabolised). Newer formulations (micronised, liposomal) have improved bioavailability. The doses studied in positive trials are typically much higher (500โ2,000mg) than in many commercial products.
Resveratrol is considered safe at standard supplemental doses. It is found naturally in red wine, though the amounts in a glass of wine are far below therapeutic supplemental doses โ and the alcohol in wine largely negates any potential health benefit.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a molecule central to cellular energy metabolism, DNA repair, and the function of sirtuins. NAD+ levels decline significantly with age, and this decline is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, reduced DNA repair capacity, and many hallmarks of ageing.
NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) and NR (nicotinamide riboside) are precursors to NAD+ that have attracted enormous research interest as potential longevity supplements. Animal studies have produced dramatic results. Human clinical trials are more limited but early results are promising โ one human trial found NMN supplementation improved muscle insulin sensitivity in older women, and several trials show safe increases in NAD+ levels.
It's important to be honest about the current state of evidence: NMN is being studied in human trials, but we do not yet have long-term human clinical data on longevity outcomes. It is a genuinely exciting area of research, but claims of dramatic anti-ageing effects in humans are ahead of the evidence. NMN supplements are widely available but are among the more expensive longevity supplements. Pat Coffey advises approaching them with cautious optimism rather than as proven interventions.
Among all supplements studied for longevity and healthy ageing, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil arguably have the broadest and deepest evidence base. They support cardiovascular health (the primary determinant of longevity in Ireland), brain health, joint health, and reduce systemic inflammation โ a driver of virtually every age-related chronic disease. DHA in particular is a structural component of brain tissue, and higher omega-3 index (a measure of EPA+DHA in red blood cells) is consistently associated with longer telomeres and reduced biological ageing markers.
Often overlooked in longevity discussions, magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme reactions including DNA synthesis and repair, energy production, protein synthesis, and regulation of over 600 proteins. Magnesium deficiency accelerates many hallmarks of ageing. Given its commonness in Ireland and the ease of supplementation, maintaining optimal magnesium levels is arguably more impactful than many premium longevity supplements.
Ireland's traditional strengths โ community bonds, access to clean food (grass-fed Irish beef, dairy, seafood), the cultural importance of social gatherings, connection to land and nature, and a genuine sense of humour that supports stress resilience โ are legitimate longevity assets. The challenge is mitigating modern Ireland's weaknesses: high ultra-processed food consumption, excess alcohol culture, physical inactivity, and high rates of mental health challenges.
Healthy ageing is best supported by proactive healthcare โ not just supplements. Regular GP check-ups, blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, bowel cancer screening (BowelScreen, available to those aged 60โ69), breast and cervical cancer screening, and eye and hearing checks are all important. The HSE HealthCheck programme provides free health assessments. This guide is general educational information only. All supplements should be discussed with your GP or pharmacist, particularly at higher doses or when combined with prescription medications. The HSE provides healthy ageing resources at hse.ie.
